At Earthsake we've been sourcing natural and organic products since before certifications existed for them. We are proud to have been part of the formulation of several types of organic, natural and earth-friendly certifications in existence today. Our suppliers and manufacturers have passed the following certification requirements now in effect. While this is only a partial list and does not cover all our products, we wanted to share with you some of the most important certifications that have already been awarded to Earthsake product ingredients and suppliers:
Local Certified Organic Cotton
Earthsake's organic cotton for mattresses and bedding products use the finest quality long-staple virgin organic cotton (free of chemicals & pesticides) grown in the USA. The organic cotton farms integrate cultural, biological, and mechanical practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity. The organic cotton is then garneted in the factory producing the bedding to maintain the strictest levels of purity throughout production. Organic farming systems rely on ecologically based practices such as cultural & biological pest management, exclusion of all synthetic chemicals, antibiotics, and hormones in crop production.
Certified Organic Cotton by Quality Assurance International (QAI)
The Organic Cotton used in our mattresses and bedding come from small farms that had their cotton certified by Quality Assurance International (QAI) to be organically grown and/or handled in accordance with the Organic foods Production Act of 1990 and 7 CFR Part 205. The Organic cotton farms for Earthsake bedding and mattresses are located throughout California, Texas and other states in America.
SKAL Certified Organic Ticking (Fabric)
The organic cotton ticking (fabric) for Earthsake mattresses and bedding are SKAL Certified for organic production and processing. SKAL strives to ensure that organic products truly originate from an organic production process by means of inspection and certification. SKAL is the legal holder of the EKO quality symbol, which stands for organic production certified by SKAL that meets the requirements of the EU-regulation for organic production.
Pure & Local™ Wool Certified by the American Humane Society
Our U.S. grown Pure Grow Wool™ is American Humane Certified for animal wellbeing. We just call 'em "happy sheep" living naturally healthy lives the old-fashioned way. We follow the strictest organic agricultural practices (no chemicals, pesticides or formaldehydes) and they graze naturally on this organic land. Our wool is processed in the purest way and garneted in the factory making the mattress or bedding product to maintain quality & purity throughout. PureGrow wool is naturally resistant to open-flame, dust mites, molds & mildews.
Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC)
All Earthsake mattresses naturally meet or exceed all federal, state and Canadian flammability standards without the use of ANY chemical fire retardants. By using PureGrow Wool as the fire-barrier in our mattresses and bedding products they meet all fire-safety laws and standards in a 100% natural pure way. So for those that may have misled you, the answer is "No - you do not need a doctors prescription to get a chemical-free bed!" With our 100% natural PureGrow wool as the fire-barrier no chemical fire-retardants are needed.
Global Organic Latex Standard
Our 100% natural botanical latex is certified by GOLS - the first Global Organic Latex Standard. It is made out of certified organic raw rubber latex. In order to label the final product as organic, it is paramount that all the raw materials in the product, comply with the requirements of organic origin. To this end, GOLS uses the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and the eco-institute-Label standard for materials other than latex that are used to turn raw organic latex into a useful consumer product. The GOLS certification process starts with the unprocessed raw rubber latex originating from USDA (or EU) certified organic plantations. Each processing step —centrifugation, molding into latex core, and processing into a product—is certified separately. This ensures the implementation of standards throughout the supply chain. Since GOLS only requires 95% natural latex - earthSake latex is also certified to 3 other purity standards:
Oeko-Tex Certified 100% Natural Rubber Latex
Our 100% natural latex is certified by Oeko-Tex to be totally free of chemicals, pesticides and formaldehydes. Don't be fooled by companies who state that their latex foam is "natural" - you must specify 100% Natural and ask if it is certified to the Oeko-Tex 100 Standard. Earthsake offers Oeko-Tex certified 100% natural latex in your choice of both the Dunlap and Talalay processes. Our natural latex comes from the botanical & sustainably harvested rubber-tree. All our latex cores are made in the USA and have no synthetic blending. GOLS allows a small percentage of chemical for fire safety or support - we do not.
100% Natural Latex approved by ECO Institute
In addition to being certified by Oeko-Tex - our 100% Natural latex has been tested by the ECO Institute to be 100% Natural Latexfoam - free of all chemicals and free of VOC's. There are absolutely no petro-chemicals (which are always found in memory foam blends) so there are no additives needed for our 100% natural latex. GOLS does allow a small percentage - we do not.
100% Natural Latex tested and approved by LGA
Our 100% Natural Latex is LGA QualiTest GmbH certified for the highest and most consistent quality you can trust. The certificate confirms that a product was tested according to selected criteria (performance characteristics, safety characteristics, statutory requirements and other individual requirements) and also meets the currently accepted technical standards. Manufacturers who wish to obtain the product certificate "LGA tested" must have their product(s) assessed within the scope of a type test, according to the above-mentioned criteria. Annual factory and product inspections must carried out to maintain the validity of the certificate. An LGA-tested certificate assures the consumer that both high-quality and safety standards have been acquired for the product.
Local OTCO Certified Organic Batting, Fabric, & Thread
Our organic cotton and wool batting, fabric, and thread for bedding & mattresses are Oregon Tilth Certified Organic (OTCO) and processed to the Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS). Oregon Tilth is the most respected name in organic certification, and has been offering organic certification for over 30 years. We should know since our mattress & bedding product materials have been earning it since 1990.
Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)
Many of our manufacturers and suppliers are certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) which is dedicated specifically for Fiber & Textile handling and production. GOTS is a project of the International Working Group, who developed these consensus-based standards over many years of discussion and deliberation. The aim of the standard is to define requirements to ensure organic status of textiles, from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labeling in order to provide a credible assurance to the end consumer. You will find the GOTS certification on the following products sold at Earthsake: Organic Cotton Towels, Organic Cotton Linens , Organic Bedding , Organic Mattress Protectors -to name a few. Keep in mind that although several other Earthsake manufacturers & suppliers also use source materials that are GOTS Certified materials, they are not allowed to use the GOTS certification on their end products if GOTS does not do the certification for such end products. Specifically, "GOTS labelling conditions do not offer to use the GOTS label (or any reference to GOTS certification) on the final textile product if the GOTS certification is valid for intermediate stages (such as yarn or fabric stage) or for specific components of the product only." While the spirit of the requirement is a good one, the enforcement of it requires that even if you use GOTS Certified materials you can not make mention of that fact -even when GOTS does not offer certification for your type of end product. This creates a counter-intuitive problem with regard to informing the public about what makes your product special and your commitment to using organic materials. The core requirements are specified on the GOTS website at: http://www.global-standard.org/licensing-and-labelling/how-to-get-products-labelled.html. Rest assured, Earthsake remains committed to sourcing not only the best products available but ensuring they use certified organic materials wherever possible - even if they can not say they use them.
Made in the USA
Earthsake is proud that all of our mattresses and earthSake bedding products are hand-made in the USA. While we do carry luxury linens and other products made outside of the United States we ensure that these meet global standards for fair trade and purity as well. Our primary focus is to start with local sources for these other products and branch out only when manufacturer or customer demand calls for it.
**All of the above certifications are held and provided by our manufacturers & suppliers. Earthsake is a retail store and website. There is no certification for a retail store or website. Certifications are for specific products and source materials specified on each product page. Not all products have earned all certifications and some products may be made with certified materials but can not state as such on the products due to recent restrictions. Earthsake makes every effort to work with suppliers and manufacturers that have earned any or all of the above certifications.**
